Load the data in a local database like MySQL?

i´m student of DBA

i´m making a new database of a company as university acreditation

And where is your issue?

the company have an own local network where they store the data but the software that they use it´s old, so i wanna create a new database where the employes can acces into the new database using one of the three client computers, the company have a computer working as server, the issue is if i can create a GUI using the web without internet, just using the local network throw the server where the database will be stored the second way is create a desktop aplication. This if my first job as DBA student so i´m trying to do the best possible work

Obviously you can – you just need to connect to the local server via lan

You can either build your own application or use a browser app

Its pretty much basic web development/networking – hopefully you can find help here anyway

If you’re using node in the backend, you might wanna use pkg to compile it into a standalone application

Good day, I need help structuring a database.

I have an items table where each item could have a set of properties that are not known beforehand.

I have thought of the following approaches:

1. Have a JSON details column to store these properties.

2. Have a separate item_details table with item_id, detail_name, detail_value (Composite primary key on item_id and detail_name)

Which approach is the better way to do it? Or is there an even better way to do this?

No JSON, use EAV.

(2) is better, but you should use several “details” tables, one for each property type.

And a number of tables storing metadata about properties.

@sixpeteunder Test cases like these are exactly why document dbs were invented(among other reasons)
However, it might not be possible to use them in your case..

Number 2 is a good option when there’s a limit to the number of properties a single item may have, otherwise it gets messy after a certain point. Individual tables for properties work fine, but for big data, data retrieval from joins become equally costly.

My opinion – see what data is queried by users and then decide which approach is best; a single table or multiple tables based on properties

This is an interesting take on it as well, although I probably won’t go with the document db.

I am biased towards the second option as well (for the same reasons I generally keep away from document DBs), but as the system is still in early design stages, I’ll have to weigh both options.

Hi, on my ubuntu 16.04 instance, I want to replace volume name /dev/xvdb with the volume-id for that volume in the /etc/fstab file. Since the MySQL 5.7 data directory is also in this volume (mounted as /var) do I need to shutdown MySQL before I do this change for safety?

fstab will be executed only at startup of your system. So you don’t need to shutdown MySQL
