You could order the data and use
limit
syntax to show only the 50% of your data. You need to find the limit value that will give you the desired 50% of the data.

I am reading about having clause in oracle.

It is written in the docs that
If there is no GROUP BY clause, the HAVING clause is applied to the
entire result as a single group.
But whenever I

is it legal on windows that you can start mysql instance without “mysql” database? i’d consider that installation as broken and would repair datadir installing databases from the scratch

Hey i was just wondering, is doing

(field1 and field2 are primary keys, all queries are for the same table, the other queries are the same for a and b, x;y;z are vars)

a:
insert … on duplicate update set field4 = field4 + 1

other queries

delete … where field1 = x and field2 = y

better than doing

b:

insert … on duplicate update IF(field3=0, field3, field4) = IF(field3=0, z, field4+1)

other queries

update … set field4 = 0, field5 = 0 where field1 = x and field2 = y

or even just
tldr

insert on duplicate
delete where x and y

vs

insert on duplicate (2 ifs)
update where x and y

The question is

is doing

insert on duplicate
delete where 2 conditions

better than

insert on duplicate (with 2 ifs)
update where 2 conditions

is it faster, slower, generally recommended or not

What would you opt to do

svart 2022-02-23 14:17:40
when it comes to performance neither of your solutions are good. i would recommend you to execute select to verify if records are in place already. if not – execute insert, if yes – execute update. in case of failure (insert statement just failed, update statement updated 0 zero row) re-try the whole transaction starting from select. in other it would be better to avoid “insert on duplicate” or “replace” statements because under the hood mysql server runs “insert” and if it would fail it will run the update. if you want me to choose only from options you provided I do not see much difference between (update is slightly faster than delete) them since the most time consuming part is “insert on duplicate”
